What are they?

  • Cash payments
  • Two kinds:
    • SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance)
    • SSI (Supplemental Security Income)

Similarities

Differences

SSI is a needs-based program

  • Must be poor
  • Limits on both income and resources

SSDI is an insurance program

  • Based on sufficient work history (6 to 40 quarters/1.5 to 10 years – depends on age of disability onset)
  • Available to qualified adult children of disabled/deceased parents eligible to receive SSDI
  • Limits on income, but no limits on resources
